DIY Wedding and Party Ideas Part 1 – Chiyogami

Chiyogami is an ancient paper made and printed by hand. To make it, purified water is used with natural fibres for strength and longevity. This creates a type of paper that is very lightweight, flexible and durable, so you can apply a fair amount of stress and it will stay beautiful and intact.

The variety of patterns and colours available today is sure to fit anyone’s style and occasion.

Even if traditional Japanese patterns do not match your taste, there are hundreds of modern designs and colour combinations, including iridescent finishes for a more delicate look.

Some of the most common uses for chiyogami are for card making and small decorative touches to existing items, simply as a way to revamp something or give it a bit of a fresh look.

One of the best ways to use it is within a theme. For example, purchase an inexpensive guest book and wrap the covers with chiyogami, or if you would like to dress up a plain book, cut out chiyogami silhouettes of anything you like.

If you have a nature theme, flower or plant silhouettes on a solid cover would add an almost storybook look to it. If you prefer a more romantic look, cut out curved vines or feathers and arrange them to one corner or side. Finally, if you prefer a simple but dressed up look, simply add a strip of decorative chiyogami to one edge.

By adding other details like a chiyogami wrapped pencil or pen, and perhaps an origami piece next to it, you immediately have a theme and items tied together as a matching set.

If a guestbook is not your style, and you want something different, try making a guest note “tree”. The basic idea of a note tree is to write a special note for the wedding couple and tie it to a branch or other object from an art installation. The guests get to decorate an object to show their love and congratulations.

The note tree also allows the guest to be a little more creative or personal, without the worry of having other guests read their note (or see drawings, if any).

To continue along with the chiyogami paper decorations, it’s a good idea to make or add small details (just like the guest book) to tie in a complete look or theme.

I will give you a few ideas for different (and simple) decorative additions for a lovely wedding party.

Napkin Rings are quite simple, all you need are strips of chiyogami to tie around the napkins, or, for a little more depth, make mini origami pieces that can be secured to the strip as a little charm.

If you would like something a little more complex, there is a variety of origami models that can be used. For example, attaching several mini origami pieces to a ribbon, or securing them to each other around the napkins.

Chiyogami coasters are also simple to make, and since the paper is very durable, it will not tear or fall apart easily if it should get wet.

There are several ways to make the coasters.

One would be to make them with simple origami models.

Another way is to adhere it to heavy stock paper or cardboard, then cut out any shapes that you prefer.

A third option that is very pretty (but a little more time consuming) is an origami lotus blossom. They are large blossoms with a gap in the middle that a glass can fit into.

If coasters are not needed, adding simple little charms to the champagne/wine glasses might be a lovely little addition.

Alternatively, adding the little charms to champagne glasses filled with mousse is a great touch for dessert.

To make them, choose iridescent or metallic chiyogami, cut it into small squares (approximately 5cm) and fold into any origami model you prefer. To tie it, just secure the origami (either by threading it or adhesive) to a string or light ribbon, and tie around the stem of the glass.

Finally, a very lovely origami decoration is a little origami model placed at everyone’s seat either to indicate their names or just to decorate their plates before they are served food.

Bridesmaid Luncheon Idea – Wine Tasting Party

The ladies’ luncheon is a very special party that the bride hosts as a way to show her appreciation for her bridesmaids. It is usually held several days before the wedding, and is often a brunch or afternoon tea. For a ladies’ event that is still elegant, but a bit more sophisticated, why not consider hosting a wine tasting party?

The whole point of having a ladies’ luncheon is to get a few hours to relax with your bridesmaids before the wedding, as well as to thank them for their support and friendship. This is also the occasion when most brides will choose to present the bridesmaid gifts to their attendants. An intimate setting, like a ladies’ luncheon, is a much better time to give your bridesmaid gifts than during the busier rehearsal dinner event.

A wine tasting party would be a really fun way to spend time with your friends. There are several ways that you can go about it. If you are having a wedding in wine country or near a vineyard, then by all means, go straight to the source. Most places will be willing to host small private parties in their vineyard, with an expert to teach you the finer points of wine appreciation.

No vineyard nearby? No problem! Almost every town now has a wine bar. These are usually very elegant places, and could make an ideal setting for your bridesmaids’ party. Generally, they will have a room that you can reserve for private events. If your group of girls is fairly small, you might also consider treating everyone to an evening at a group wine appreciation class.

Your home is always a great place to have a party. If you would like to host a wine tasting party for your bridesmaids, there are several ways that you can go about it. One is to hire a sommalier to come to your home for the afternoon or evening, bringing with him some wine selections to sample. This would be a very elegant idea.

Of course, a wine tasting party at your own house could also be an entirely DIY event. Especially if you have some knowledge about wine, it will be fairly simple to organize. Even if you know very little about wine, you can easily learn the basics from a book or the Internet.

There are some basic items that you will want to be sure to have on hand for your wine tasting bridesmaids’ party. The first is a lot of wine glasses. A good format for a wine tasting is to sample three white wines and three red wines. The last thing you want to be doing is running to the sink to clean out glasses between every type of wine, so get some extra glasses to keep the party flowing smoothly.

Obviously, the wine itself will be important at a wine tasting event. If your guests are largely novices, you might want to serve a selection of the most common varieties, so that they can get a basic understanding of the difference between a chardonnay and a pinot grigio or a merlot and a shiraz. You can also choose to serve wines based on a region, such as Italy or France.

Finally, don’t forget the food. It does not need to be extravagant, but a nice selection of cheese, fruit always pairs well with wine. For an evening party, you can add in some warm appetizers to make it more filling. With good wine and good food, your bridesmaids’ party will be a relaxing time to enjoy with your closest girlfriends and unwind before your wedding.

What do you think of this gift for my Husband to be?

Our wedding is a little over 2 weeks away, and I’m getting VERY excited!!

I would like to give him a gift, after the wedding, when we are alone (at last), that would be something sentimental that he’d keep forever.

I am planning already to print my (self-written) vows on some nice paper, and give him that to keep.

The other idea I had was this: FH and I are both avid travelers, and have made it our mission to see as much of the world as we can, with each other. We’ve already done quite a bit, and it’s very important to us. My gift idea was to get him one of those gemstone inlaid globes http://www.1worldglobes.com/1WorldGlobes/GemstoneGlobes/blkopal46siltri.html and on the brass ring that goes around it, have one of our favorite quotes, from Whitman,

“I give you my love more precious than money,
I give you myself before preaching or law;
Will you give me yourself, will you come travel with me?
Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?”

And then to have our wedding date after that. This will probably cover the circumference of the brass ring.

What do you think? Is this a good gift? Or is it too cheesy?
It’s not large – the whole thing is about 8″ or 9″ square. It would probably wind up on his desk at work. :D

5 Fun Ideas For Theme Party

So you want to throw a party for your family and friends. Whatever the occasion, making your party a themed party will make it much more memorable and successful. If you need inspiration, take a look at the following ideas for a theme party:

1. Cocktail Party – The cocktail party was traditionally the early party of a dinner party but in recent years has become a theme party in its own right.

Dress should be formal black tie for men and either black or red dress for the ladies. Budget dependant, you could hire a waiter to make the fancy cocktails or you can have cocktail stations throughout your venue with menus for your guests to make their own.

2. Mexican Party – The Mexican theme party is a chance to dress up in sombreros and dance the night away while drinking Corona, lime and plenty of Tequila. The ladies should wear beautiful Mexican peasant dresses fit for a Fiesta festival. Dance the Samba all night long!

3. Masquerade Party – The Masquerade party is your chance dress as flamboyantly as is imaginable. The whole idea is to hide your identity with the use of a mask, just like in Tom Cruise’s Eyes Wide Shut. You can have a contest for the most flamboyant costume and perhaps have a public unveiling at midnight. Spread plenty of candles around the venue to create a sense of mystery.

4. Toga Party – The heart and soul of this theme is obviously the toga. This can essentially be a white bed sheet wrapped round you 1.5 times with the end thrown over your shoulder. To top off the costume, wear sandals and leaf laurels. This theme is very easy and inexpensive to throw.

5. Superhero – Dress up in superhero outfits (this may be your only chance) and hire a smoke machine for the entrance. Make your invitations out of colored paper making sure to cut them out into a Superman logo shape. Play superhero movies on a loop.

DIY Christmas Gift Basket Ideas

It is not easy to select the Christmas gift that will please to everyone: we never know if the

gift will be appreciated by its recipient.

How many times have you received a gift that is never emerged out of the cupboard in which you

putted it?

I myself received hundreds of gifts that I do not use, especially at Christmas Time. And I do

not mention the decorative objects, that I do not know what to do with because they do not match the decoration of my house or simply because I have no place to put them on.

This year, try to give useful and/or consumable Christmas gifts. By giving something useful and

consumable such as skin care products or food products, you are sure that your gift will be

appreciated.

Christmas gift baskets are the solution.

Unfortunately, ready-made gift baskets can be expensive and we sometimes have to spend a lot of

money to buy them without being sure that all the contained products will please.

So, what about a homemade Christmas gift basket? It is an excellent way to save money on the

cost of the basket and products included. You even do not have to buy the basket.

Gift baskets can be easily made out of wooden boxes, briefcases made of leather or vinyl, or

shoe boxes nicely decorated…

If the products you plan to include in the basket are too expensive, you will be able to reduce

their number and save more money.

Here are some Christmas gift basket ideas.

“Rustic Gourmet”:

Varnish a wooden wine case, use a “rustic oak” tinted varnish

Fill the case with decorative straw or unbleached silk or crepe paper

Add the following products:

- Three bottles of wine (red, rose and white),

- A pot of fat liver,

- 2 legs duck confit,

- A pot of deer pate,

- A pot of wild boar,

- Three jars of wine jelly (red, rose and white),

- A pot of onion confit,

- A pot of truffles.

Economic Option:

- A bottle of sweetened white wine,

- A pot of deer paté,

- A pot of wild boar,

- A jar of wine jelly

“I Love Chocolate”:

Use a metallic box,

Fill it with pink silk or crepe paper

Add the following products:

- A bottle of chocolate liquor,

- 250 g Leonidas chocolates,

- Chocolate bars – Côte d’Or Special Edition,

- A natural cocoa box,

- Boxes of fruit, flower or citrus flavoured sugar

“Espana Por Favor”:

In a metallic basket, place red and yellow silk or crepe paper

Add the following products:

- A bottle of Ponche,

- A bottle of “Sangre de Toro” wine

- A pata negra ham or serrano ham,

- A chorizo,

- A “Manchego” cheese,

- A bottle of Spanish olive oil,

- Almond Turron,

- An assortment of Christmas cookies (Surtido de Navidad)

“Provence” (skin care):

Cover a shoebox with Special Christmas gift wrap

Line the inside with colorful silk paper

Surround the box with a wide colored ribbon

Put a towel of the same color

Add the following products:

- A Marseilles scented soap,

- A shower gel,

- A box of bath salts,

- A bottle of body scented oil,

- A bottle of floral water,

- A horsehair glove

“Belgian Beer Discovery” Gift Basket:

Use a wooden shelf and put the bottles on it. Belgium produces more than 680 different sorts of

high quality beers that satisfy all tastes, the choice is yours…

You can create an infinite themed gift baskets set; do not hesitate to create a gift basket for

whiskey, cigar, great music, book amateurs… you are only limited by your imagination.
